AI Workflow Design / By Holden Clayton

Design the work.
Build with AI.
Test what ships.

Turn a recurring task into an AI workflow you can test, document, and hand off. A self-directed course for people who run the work, with no coding required.

01 / The curriculum

AI Workflow Design.

Six written modules built around one fictional case: prepare an internal renewal brief, then check the draft before anyone acts on it. Apply the same approach to a task you own.

  1. Map the work

Write a one-page workflow card. Define what starts the task, who owns it, what it produces, and where a person needs to make a decision.

    • Workflow card
    • Baseline
  2. Choose trusted inputs

Assemble a practice packet with just the fields the draft needs. Decide which source wins when records disagree and when to pause for missing information.

    • Practice packet
  3. Design the model task

Write a prompt for one drafting task. Run it twice, check its claims against the source, and see how the instructions handle an incomplete record.

    • Drafting exercise
    • Source checks
  4. Build the workflow

Make a simple prototype that connects intake, drafting, verification, and human approval. Walk through what happens when a request repeats or a step fails.

    • Prototype
    • Review steps
  5. Test against known answers

Decide what each test should produce before you run it. Try normal, missing, and conflicting inputs, then record what passed and what needs to change.

    • Test log
    • Answer keys
  6. Roll out and hand off

Finish with a prototype, a test log, and a one-page operating guide. Score your work with a rubric and define when a teammate should pause the workflow.

    • Capstone
    • Operating guide
